Horror? Served.
Tension? Well-catered.
Concept? Top-notched.
Acting? Beyond on-point.

The film directed by Eric Matti, in 2019 entitled Kuwaresma, follows a dystopic family which was haunted by the ghost of their youngest daughter. Though, in the course of mourning, secrets unfold. A shuddering one. The film was set in the 1900s, as supported by the color palette. Which was grainy and a bit of sepia. Although, the visibility of the film was well-maintained even in the dark. Hence, cinematography was one of its fortes. For it was able to encapsulate the beauty of the setting but still envelops an eerie feeling.
The camera work also highlighted the subtleness of the film. Such as the angle being slightly higher if the close-up was on the father, the separation of shots in a family dinner, the side perceptions of the camera, and the like. Moreover, it became the channel of the film to connect with and take the audience into the film. Along with it were sound effects. Which carried the heaviness of the film; in with the cooperation of lighting.

The editing, movie effects, and set design are believable enough, considering the budget for films. Especially how they leave cliffhangers and then surprise the audience with a jump scare or simply leave them on the edge of their seats. The most notable aspect, however, was the acting. Though, what can we expect from John Arcilla and Sharon Cuneta? Yet, the portrayal of their son did not lag behind. The three actors were more than enough to satisfy the viewers' expectations. The chemistry between them was natural, and they are very much like a family. Their rawness in emotions and piercing gaze. Even the screams still haunt me.
However, the writer had become quite ambitious. As the concept of the film is patriarchy, they have brought eras of it and had compressed it in the dimension of film. Which unfortunately stray from the plot of the story. It was a bit forced as well and changed the sense of a character’s death.
For me, it would be better if the writer focused more on the protagonist's family. Specifically on developing the meek and martyr mother. Which I hope to develop bit by bit. Though, since she had changed drastically, I hope that she was able to embody it deeper. The protagonist's development was great, but there are loopholes in creating his identity, which I hope will be polished more.
As there are circumstances that do not add up nor explain. Furthermore, the father’s backstory or a simple glimpse of how he became as such would be quite interesting and a cherry on top. I guess for the type of concept they are going for, it would be better if it is a psychological-thriller rather than horror-mystery-thriller genre.
Overall, I truly adore the concept and creation of the film. I would also recommend it for anyone to watch. As for me, it was by far the most interesting Filipino horror film due to its concept. concept of how patriarchy kills the family. That a family should function not as a military unit but as a home. A home where love should foster and acceptance goes both ways. Rank should not be imposed but rather based on respect. I do also like how there are minor issues that intensify the concept, which are being a bystander, mentality, and mental health issues. Hence, if I were to rate it, I’d say it would be more of a seven over ten or maybe an eight. Though, I hope you will find it as interesting as I do!
The bug that ruins the family would lie on the inside. Creeping within the relations and eating the values. Find the bug and kill the bug. Consequences are foreseen but expected.

I'm not really a fan of Filipino Movies but perhaps I will try.
ReplyDeleteI'm grateful for the opportunity to share and present this magnificent piece to you through this platform. Go girl, try it. Don't forget to share your insight about the movie; I'm curious about your perception.
DeleteThanks for sharing this, I've seen the beginning of this movie a long time ago, but I will rewatch it with my grandmother because she's a sharonian. This is very informative and we can connect it to the reality of how patriarchy kills our system.
ReplyDeleteI guess living in a patriarchal society was the curse given to us. Moreover, it's exciting to know what your grandmother's reaction will be, especially considering what you've mentioned about her being an avid fan. To be honest, the portrayal of Ma'am Sharon Cuneta is something that I've been craving to see. I hope the industry will give her more projects like this, as it's rare to see her act like this, but she's still a gem.

ReplyDeleteI like this because it's well-organized. The ideas are given clearly. I commend how observant you are, and your remark about "camera work" amazes me. I appreciate that you offered your own criticism, opinion, and even suggestion of the movie, not just a passing thought. I haven't seen this movie yet, but from what you've said about it, I think it sounds interesting. I'll watch it, and I agree that the main actors are very well-known for their acting skills, so when I do, I'll expect more.
Go, check it, I've looking forward on your analysis to this film. Please let me know your insights. I want to know the other side of the coin.
DeleteThe movie was beyond excellent; it was indeed a roller coaster ride of emotions, which each scene evoked in my mind. With a backsplash of sound effects, there was an intriguing blending of music and ominous ambient noises. The yelling of blasphemous claims that will make you feel awful just for hearing them. Its gloomy, turquoise cinematography paired with its tight structuring provided some impressive jump scares, and its outstanding motion graphics for the creature and ghost added to the frights. The attire and props were particularly well used by production design as the scenes cut between several timelines. The portrayal of each character is superb; kudos to all the people who work hard just to deliver a magnificent masterpiece. I love that you have this interest in these kinds of movies. I hope that we can see more like this in Philippine films.
ReplyDeleteDefinitely, I hope to see more films like this; to watch an artist who depicts reality while also adding some spices is what I've always loved. We share the same thoughts about this movie; may you keep promoting it and expressing your amazement.
Deletenot really a fan of filipino movie but i will definetly try this one
ReplyDeleteThe pleasure is mine. Good luck, and enjoy your new discovery.
DeleteI usually like my Filipino films in the genre of drama and lovestory. Maybe it's time to try something just like this "Kuwaresma".
ReplyDeleteGo, I would love to. I think going out of our bubble and trying something new is not bad. Enjoy watching. Let me know your feedback, thank you.
DeleteI love how well detailed the review is on what to expect on this film.
ReplyDeleteThank you; I appreciate it. Try to watch it, go ahead and put it to the test.
DeleteI'm not that fond of watching movies unless it's Filipino classic movies. I'll recommend this movie to my mom cause she idolized Miss Sharon Cuneta.

DeleteHonestly, classic Filipino movies are always around the corner. I think I must take this as a sign to watch one. Could you recommend one? Anyways, I noticed there are a lot of fans of Madame Sharon Cuneta, which proved her excellence in her field. Let's keep supporting her and the whole cast in their future projects. What if they reunite to make another film again? It's worth the wait.

ReplyDeleteA transient wave of intolerable strain plagues you as a tragedy splits a family. This movie was a maze for me, I wrecked my head to understand each scenes. But one thing I concluded, its spectacular. And same to you, I love this movie. It's more than a film; it's a work of art. It was crazy, as it was more perplexed than frightened, you are left by it. The revelation hangs me in confusion, it was goosebumps after all. I hope that we can rewatch it together.
Our thoughts are parallel. I remember the moment when I just stared for a few minutes, trying hard to catch up with what was going on. But the screams are still echoing in my head. And yes, sure, anytime
DeleteLove the blog! It explained the story very well. Now, I want to watch it 🤔
